What do Unitarian Universalists Believe?

Unitarian Universalists share common values and a commitment to support each other in our religious growth. The Unitarian Universalist Association Principles and Purposes describe these values and list the religous traditions from which we gain inspiration.

Our Beliefs describes what Unitarian Universalists in genereal believe and what some of our individual members believe.

Where do I park?

Unfortunately, Eliot Chapel has limited parking. There are two small lots behind the church that may be accessed from Madison (the street that runs right along the railroad tracks just south of the Chapel). There are a few spaces reserved for Visitors in the closest lot to Eliot. Newcomer's may park in the Farmer's Market spaces on Argonne Rd. between Taylor and Kirkwood Rd, but members and friends are requested to leave these parking spaces for Farmer's Market customers. There are public parking lots accross from the Farmer's Market and just west of the Market. There are also a few business lot off Argonne Rd. across the street from the Farmer's Market that are not regularly used on the weekends, and open to public parking. Street Parking is available on Argonne Rd.

Newcomers should be warned that parking is limited, and a few extra minutes may be required to find a space and get to the Chapel. We do apologize for this inconvenience, and wish we had more options available for parking.

What entrance should I use?

Eliot Chapel has two main entrances, one on the East side of the building off the parking lots, and one on the West side of the building off Taylor Ave. From the East (parking lot) entrance, go through the foyer to the double doors on the right that lead into the fellowship hall (Adams Hall). Proceed through the hall until you see a short hall on your left (past the office and the library). The sanctuary is down that hall on the right. Ushers will be at the sanctuary door to answer any questions you might have.

From the West (Taylor Ave. side), you may enter either at the big red doors straight into the foyer at the back of the sanctuary, or you may enter the glass breezeway doors to the right of the red doors. If you're coming for the first time, we would recommend coming in the red doors, as you will find an usher inside to direct you either into the sanctuary or to the Religious Education rooms if you have children.

What do people typically wear to church?

The style of clothing most people wear to Eliot Chapel could be called "business casual." A few people wear jeans and t-shirts, and a few wear ties, sports jackets, or dresses. Most people wear a variety of casual pants suits or casual dresses.

Where should I go if I have children?

Eliot's building was built in several phases, and the Religious Education rooms are located in different parts of the building. This can be quite confusing for newcomers, and it will likely take several visits to figure out where everything is. Here are some places to begin:

  • The nursery is located in the west addition, easily accessed from the Taylor Ave doors. Enter the glass breezeway doors off Taylor, and go right through the double doors and down the three stairs. Follow the hall as it turns left. The nursery is immediately on the right.
  • Children ages 2-4 meet in classrooms in the east addition, the one closest to the back parking lot. If you are entering from the parking lot doors, turn left through the double doors in the foyer and look for the rooms marked "Intermediate" and "Pre-K" at the far end of the hall. If you're entering from Taylor, the best procedure is to find Children's Chapel (see below) and ask someone to show you where the rooms for the younger children are.
  • Children in grades K-3 begin their day with us in the Children's Chapel, located just across the hall from the nursery. They can be dropped off in Children's Chapel, and they will be taken with their class to a classroom in the east addition to the building. Parents will pick them up from their classrooms, and may need to ask for directions. All the rooms are clearly labeled with the classes that meet in them.
  • Children grades 4 and 5 begin their day in their classroom and end it in Children's Chapel. The 4th and F5th grade classrooms are downstairs in the east addition (the one closest to the parking lot). If you are entering from the parking lot doors, turn left through the double doors in the foyer and look the stairs on your left. The rooms are clearly marked at the far end of the downstairs hall. If you're entering from Taylor, the best procedure is to find Children's Chapel (see above) and ask someone to show you where the rooms for the 4th and 5th graders are. These children may be picked up in Children's Chapel after the service.
  • The Jr. High classroom is downstairs in the east addition (the one closest to the parking lot). If you are entering from the parking lot doors, turn left through the double doors in the foyer and look for the stairs on your left. The room is clearly marked at the far end of the downstairs hall. If you're entering from Taylor, the best procedure is to fine Children's Chapel (see above) and ask someone to show you where the Jr. High room is. Jr. Highers stay in their classroom for the entire hour and may be picked up there after the service.
  • The Sr. High classroom is located in the west addition, off Taylor Ave, near the nursery. It is on the right as you go down the three steps from the Taylor entrance (see nursery above).
