Memo 5: Major Changes in the Proposed By-Laws April 19, 2004 We ask you to consider the proposed By-Law revisions scheduled for a congregational vote at the May 23rd Annual Meeting. We have been sending out "Leadership Memos" to committee chairpersons and other Eliot Lay Leaders. We have advertised these memos in the Newsletter, but if you were not aware of them and would like to read them, you will find them at: http://www.eliotchapel.org/LeadershipMemos.htm. There is a more detailed explanation of changes included with the proposed By-Laws. The major changes in these By-Laws include:
Change in the Office of the TreasurerThe current By-Laws define the office of Treasurer as, "receives and disburses monies." However, since Eliot Chapel hired a Business Administrator years ago, this description is no longer accurate. The revisions define the Treasurer as someone who gives financial advice to the Chapel. That person will track the financial doings through meetings of the Finance Committee and with the Business Administrator. The change in the By-Laws is meant to reflect the reality of our current organization. Change in the office of Vice-ChairIn these By-Laws, we have made it explicit that the Vice-Chair is meant to succeed the Chairperson by changing the title to "Chair-Elect." This change will make leadership transitions at the Board level more smooth, and ensure that the Chairperson has been involved in leadership on the Board for at least a year. A Chance to Discuss these ChangesThe Constructive Engagement Team of Eliot Chapel will facilitate a conversation around the proposed By-Law changes on Sunday, May 2. We will meet at 10:15 (after the 9:15 service ) in Children's Chapel, and at 12:00 (after the 10:45 service) in the sanctuary. Please bring any questions and comments you have about the By-Law revisions to those meetings. We will have limited time for discussion at the Annual Meeting, and wish to give everyone an opportunity to fully understand the changes. |
