Administrative Assistant - Joy Gorden

I have worked at Eliot Chapel for 25 years. Initially, my plan was to work here for 8 months and then go back to school, but I have two children, who were then 16 &14 years old, and I was our sole support. So I stayed at Eliot, and what started out as "just an interim job" became my life's vocation.

Before I came here, the custodial position was part-time, often held by college age young men always here on payday but not often otherwise. To them it was just a job. In this free church, I had the freedom to create the custodial job through scheduling cleaning and researching for the best and most cost-effective products for the janitorial budget.

Several years ago I transferred to my present job as administrative assistant. 90% of my time is spent answering the phone, taking messages, answering questions and directing traffic. I am responsible for all scheduling at Eliot, sanctuary, Adams Hall, and classrooms. I also handle all rentals from outside individuals and groups. I also supervise the cleaning of Eliot and deal with sales people, tradesman, and persons in need of food, money, shelter and comfort.

The tests people take to see what they're suited to do indicated that serving others is a job I would do well, where I would find the most satisfaction. I never knew a job could be so rewarding.
