Welcome to Eliot Chapel

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS SITE IS STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION.  PLEASE BEAR WITH US AS WE GROW AND IMPROVE!

We bid you welcome to this house. It is a place we love and tend with care. We welcome all seekers after truth without regard to ethnicity, gender, sexual identity, or religious background.

Preachers here have the task of presenting religion fearlessly, freely, and faithfully.

Hearers here have the responsibility of testing what they hear, not only with the critical mind, but also in the living of everyday life.

Our faith is lived not in creeds, but in deeds; not in the hereafter but the here-and-now; not carved in stone, but open to new revelation. We draw upon many scriptures. Our overarching values are freedom, reason, pluralism, and love.

We are glad your path has brought you here. Welcome!

Tough Times

“It was a harsh summer... For many, it was as if the clocks had rolled back to the thirties and the time of the Great Depression. Company upon company declared bankruptcy. Unemployment soared. The ‘severe and prolonged recession,’ as it was dubbed by the media, sent ripples of depression across America. Politicians used the depressed state of the country to their advantage.”

The excerpt above is from evangelist Robert Schuller’s bestseller, Tough Times Never Last; Tough People Do. And by the way, the book was written 25 years ago, and he was talking about the recession of 1982!

A Caring Congregation

One of the realities of church life is that size really does make a difference. Small congregations have a sense of “knowing one another” and an awareness of what is going on in each others’ lives that is not possible once they start nearing  about 200 people. The larger a congregation grows, the more it needs to have smaller groups of people that meet together so people can have this sense of “being known.”
