Outreach Committee Results (2003)

Each year, the Board of Trustees of Eliot Chapel allocates funds from its general operating budget for the Outreach Support Fund. The Social Action Committee is charged to recruit an Outreach Committee, representative of the church community. The "Outreach" committee is organized to research and determine the recipients of the "Outreach Support" funds. The Eliot congregation is then asked to submit applications on behalf of charitable organizations. Organizations in which Eliot members/friends are involved are generally given preference and the approved candidates receive donations ranging from $150.00 to $400.00.

This year, thanks to the efforts of those involved, Eliot Chapel was able to distribute a total of $4,050.00 to the following charities:

This program provides a fun opportunity for enrichment in the summer by sponsoring educational and recreational activities for more than 100 disadvantaged children aged 5 – 15. Missouri Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice (MORCRC)

Nominated by Helen McIntosh (Eliot member – SLAUUC Representative on the MORCRC Governing Board). This organization provides free All-Options counseling and Post Abortion counseling by trained clergy to the woman and her family. They provide educational programs and support efforts to reduce teen pregnancy. They also provide a peaceful presence of clergy in support of reproductive choice in the presence of anti-abortion demonstrators. The funds will used to underwrite the Coalition’s programs, which provide free counseling by trained clergy and religious leaders. The funds will assist with costs for phone service, Yellow Pages advertisement and training materials.

Non-Financial assistance: Become well-informed advocates of reproductive choice and its importance to family health and social stability. Volunteer for various types of office support. Support of their Gateway to Financial Fitness Program, which is a collaborative effort committed to personal financial education and stability for all people in the community. This is a free service offered to low income families. Provides training for financial health and home ownership. The agency also provides emergency rent/mortgage payment support.

This organization is run by volunteers and supplies food and clothing to needy families in the Cedar Hill, Dittmer, Grubville and Morse Mill areas. They also accept and distribute clothing, as well as, give aid in whatever way they can.

This is the only agency in St. Louis area working specifically with children from birth to pre-school who are blind or visually impaired. Mission statement: "To help young children with visual impairments reach their full potential by providing comprehensive individualized education and therapy services to them, and support services to their families." Non-financial assistance: Volunteers are very welcome for special events, working in the office, participating in committees and representing the agency in outreach efforts. Items that are always needed for the families are: supplies for a new baby, any size sheets and blankets, curtains, area rugs, towels, children's hats & gloves, Fire extinguisher, first aid kits. Nominated by Claire Robertson (Eliot member – SSDN Board). Founded in 1886 by 15 Unitarian women. The Early Care Network (ECN), a division of SSDN, serves 92 expectant families in the south St. Louis inner city by connecting pregnant women and their families to prenatal and postnatal care. Through home visitation, ECN providers help pregnant women to plan for healthy childbirth and their infant’s early development. Also, the ECN provides some of the needed formula, diapers and miscellaneous hygiene supplies for infants during the early months of growth. ECN providers and community volunteers present workshops on health and family issues during monthly Family Center Nights. Staff and community volunteers provide life skills training and education opportunities. Most expectant families are single-parent households that are on public assistance or earn less than minimum wages. With support from Eliot Chapel, ECN providers will be able to purchase early care supplies for these families.

Non-financial assistance: The Early Care Network would greatly appreciate volunteers that would facilitate discussion groups or present information on health, family and personal growth. Also, an R.E. class could prepare infant baskets for expectant families.

Since 1977, this shelter has provided emergency assistance to abused women and their children. The shelter staff also provides outreach/education to the community about physical abuse. The shelter provides "after care" to residents who move out of the shelter and back into the community away from their abuser.

Non-financial assistance: Volunteer work always available to help with cleaning, moving things (many hands needed)! The more volunteers, the grant money approved. Tuition is sliding scale. Emphasis placed on Parent/teacher interaction involving education. Have degree teachers on staff. Demonstrates positive methods of discipline. Children learn about the world around them through hands on experiences. The funds will be used continuing education for the teaching staff and classroom equipment.

Non-financial assistance in the form of volunteer work is welcome (reading to the children, working with kids on computers, keeping up the grounds, lending library training for parents, etc…). Children’s book donations are welcome.

Non-financial assistance in the form of tutoring – ESL for older and younger people. The basic commitment is a little time, patience and caring! Help with understanding financial matters, e.g., income tax preparation, general Family Financial issues, major purchases like cars, financing, credit, accounting, budgeting. Any act of friendship (auto tour of St. Louis, etc..) is appreciated.

Mission is to provide exceptional learning and growth experiences during the child’s early developmental years, while fostering greater understanding and support for children with special needs. Provides occupational, physical, speech, developmental and play therapies. Outreach funds would benefit the Therapeutic Listening program for children with autism and other pervasive developmental disorders.

Nominated last year by Pat Berg (Eliot member). The Center is a drop-in and support center for people living with mental illness. Support groups are held daily. Meetings are open to everyone. Lunch is provided at a nominal fee. Speakers and videos provide education. The Center’s goal is to provide a safe, healthy and comfortable environment where adults may take responsibility for their recovery through self-help, peer support, spirituality, socialization and education.

Nominated by Dave McDonald (Eliot member). Mission is to improve children’s lives, strengthen families and impact communities by providing programs that effectively connect parents and children. FSC emphasizes bringing non-custodial Fathers into contact with their children through programs that emphasize education (GED), job search and gaining employment skills, parenting sill practices and rebuilding "fragile family" situations. Programs require dedication, commitment, class time, counseling and graduation for successful candidates. 76% success rate in 2002.
