The mission of the RE Council is to provide a safe environment for active learning of UU principles and sources of our tradition, the development of spiritual identity and growth, and a connection to the greater community for our families.

The Religious Education Council develops organizational procedures for each committee or group represented on the Council. The Religious Education Council is represented by the following committees: RE Curriculum; Children's Chapel; Family Support & Outreach; and Teacher Support.

See REjuvenation!, the Religious Education newsletter in pdf form, for our latest news. For more information about the RE Council, contact Juliette Crone-Willis.

Sunday Mornings

Religious Education is a life-long process that is not confined to an hour on Sunday morning, but involves every day of our lives. We wish to provide a foundation that includes tolerance, freedom, reason and love.

At Eliot Chapel, we strive to enhance this education by asking questions, discovering truths and sharing experiences among ourselves and with the broader religious community.

The curriculum covers a variety of themes including: Unitarian Universalist identity, Jewish and Christian heritage, world religions, and respect for others and our planet, all viewed through our unique Unitarian Universalist lens that that promotes our principles of justice, love, trust, safety, tolerance and encouragement. In our classes, we question, worship, sing, play, act, discuss, draw, create, share, collect, meditate, think, and have fun.

Classes are from 9:30-10:30 a.m. (Nursery - 5th Grade) and 11:00 a.m. -12:00 noon (Nursery - Senior High) on Sundays from mid-September through early June. Our Kindergarten through 3rd Grade classes begin each hour with a Children's Chapel, then proceed directly to classes (except the first Sunday of each month, when Kindergarten through 5th Grade children attend the beginning of the service with their parents).

We are a cooperative program and can only maintain our excellent programming with the strong support of our parents and friends. For more information concerning our Religious Education program and volunteer opportunities, consult our detailed booklets located in the Visitors' Corner, or contact Joan Casey, Religious Education Director .

Guests

Families are welcome to visit any Sunday. During the first several weeks of the church year, there are greeters waiting at the front breezeway or rear foyer (off the parking lot) to assist you to find your way. The rest of the year signs are posted and maps (located outside of Joan Casey's office) are also available to help orient guests. And of course, people are happy to make sure you find where you should go - so just ask if you're not sure!

On your first visit, be sure to pick up a copy of our Guest Information guide and fill out a Visitor Sign-In form (available from any teacher), so that we may know about you and your child(ren). Parents with children 1st grade or younger should also get one photo of themselves taken for identification purposes.

Our teachers and caregivers are background screened through the state of Missouri and we always have a minimum of two adults assigned to each class. To further help ensure our children's safety, we ask that parents sign out their children (through 5th grade) at the end of the morning. Parents with older children should make arrangements where to meet after classes.

We ask that families register their children by the third visit.

Youth Programs

Our Junior Youth Group (7th & 8th graders) and Senior Youth Group (9th - 12th graders) both meet at 11:00 a.m. The groups are designed to support youth as they become confident in articulating their own faith and learning to understand other faith perspectives. The doors to both youth rooms are always open to visitors.

For more about our youth, please see our Youth Programs webpage.

Adult Education and Enrichment

Through special classes, workshops and seminars during the year, Eliot provides opportunities for adults to explore their spirituality, to develop their personal growth, to reflect on life experiences, to explore the beliefs and practices of the world's religions, and to learn about Unitarian-Universalism, past and present.
