Eliot's Families Working For Social Justice!
Our final Religious Education theme for this year has been Social Justice. We've been talking with the kids about accepting themselves and others, resolving conflicts, and working to make a better world. We know our families work for social action and justice in both big and small ways. At our Milestones service on June 10, we'd like to celebrate all the things our families do to help make the world a better place for everybody.
We'll be building a "wall of service" using "bricks" that have your big and small acts of justice written on them. This wall will be displayed in Children's Chapel next year. So what do we need you to do?
Look for the "bricks" sent home with your child from church. Fill them out with your ideas of what your family has done to help build our wall. Have you cooked for the homeless through Room at the Inn? Have you served meals at a soup kitchen? Have you taken time out of your days and weeks to collect recycling material and bring it to the recycling center? Have you visited nursing homes to talk with residents there? Did you buy a present for our Giving Tree at Christmas? Did you collect for UNICEF at Halloween? Have you supported an important social justice cause with your time, talent, and treasure? One of our 4th graders held a lemonade stand/bake sale/bracelet sale and turned in the proceeds for our Children's Chapel collection for ARC, a group that supports children with AIDS.
Fill out your "bricks" and turn them in to Joan Casey, or bring them with you on June 10. Look for RE volunteers at the doors who will collect the bricks as soon as you arrive. Help us build a wall we can be proud of!

Summer Religious Education Classes
Parents - Please don't forget to register your children for Summer RE classes if you plan on attending summer services. Children entering 1st grade in the fall and older will attend a multiage class where we'll explore the deeper messages in Dr. Seuss stories. The nursery will be open as usual and there will be a preschool age class for children 3 years old and up (must be potty trained). Parents will be needed to help assist in classrooms.
Summer Camp
We hope you can join us at Eliot Chapel Summer Camp this August 6 - 10 from 9:00 to noon each day. Our theme this year is Stories the Hebrew Prophets Told. We think it's important our kids hear Bible stories from our UU perspective. Our volunteers are busy planning for all the fun, so we really hope that we see you there. Registration forms need to be in by June 30.
Not Sure Where Your Child Goes on Sunday?
Summer services are right around the corner, which means we're busily preparing for Summer RE classes. Once again, there will be three classrooms open during the summer. Members of the Curriculum Committee will lead the curriculum called "Dr. Seuss Saved My Life" for the older RE class, which is for kids entering 1st grade and up in the fall. The preschool class will use the curriculum "Story Time," a literature based program. The nursery will also be open. Parents will assist in these classes.
Registration for the summer will begin on April 29. If you plan on attending summer services, even just a couple, please fill out and return the form as quickly as possible so that we can get the classrooms staffed. (Most likely parents will only need to help out once or twice, depending on enrollment.) You'll want to note that class requirements are a little different over the summer in order to keep class sizes even. Thanks!

June 10: Milestones Sunday
Come help us celebrate the Milestones of the past 12 months! We will honor many transitions - including those who have learned to read, new siblings, new jobs, retirements, and new grandchildren. We will honor those graduating from our 6th grade GATE program at 9:30, and those graduating from high school at 11:00. If you've had a particularly big milestone in your life this year, let us know!
Please contact Joan Casey if your child learned to read this year! We will be celebrating that accomplishment on June 10 during our Milestone Sunday.
Summer Swimming Invitation
Parents and children are invited to swim on Wednesdays from 1:00 to 5:00 pm at the pool of Pat Lee. The first swim will be on June 6. Pat has been opening her pool to Eliot Chapel friends and members for twenty years now. Bring a snack or drink to share and RSVP at 314-432-5379. There is plenty of shade, a slide, and a diving board for the adventuresome, and plenty of helping hands and eyes if you have more than one non-swimmer. Babies are welcome. It is a great time to get to know and bond with other adults and kids at Eliot. We have fun! Hope to see you there.

Family Volunteerism Kits for Kids
Summer brings additional struggles for families in our community who live at or below the poverty level. Children who normally receive free breakfast and lunch at school are in danger of going hungry. Circle of Concern, a food pantry and assistance program in nearby Valley Park, will be distributing extra bags of food for families with children, along with activity books and crayons. The Social Action Committee is having a "Kits for Kids" drive all through the summer to support Circle's efforts to reach families in need. Please consider adding a few of the following items to your weekly shopping list, or make it a family service project to gather a "Kit" each month:
- Peanut butter and jelly
- Boxed cereal
- Spaghetti-os and canned pastas
- Macaroni and cheese
- Applesauce and fruit cups
- 100% fruit juice in plastic jugs or juice boxes
- Other kid-friendly foods
- Coloring books, activity books, and fun educational workbooks
- Crayons or markers
Please place donations in boxes marked "Kits for Kids" outside of Children's Chapel or near the shopping cart in Adams Hall. For more information, see Alicia Boelhauf or Amy Stark. Thank you for your support!
