REjuvenation!Religious Education News - February 2004REjuvenation! ArchivesA Note from JoanLoveOn February 14, many of us will celebrate a holiday devoted to love, and not just romantic love: we may send Valentine cards to our children or our grandchildren or our dear friends. It can be a fun and simple holiday, with maybe some flowers or a nice restaurant thrown into the mix. Or it can be a holiday filled with angst if your loved one places too much value on expressing love through money spent. If we perform well on the big day, we can return to our usual haphazard ways. Sometimes I read the paper and despair at what appears to be the lack of love that surrounds us. We wonder why no one seems to be acting with a loving heart. I could quote dozens of headlines each day that illustrates this dearth of love. At the risk of sounding a little too much like Burt Bacharach, what the world needs now is love, sweet love. We wish that people would act if not more lovingly, at least with more civility. I'm a firm believer that we can never change others, we can only change ourselves. I find myself in a hurry on my way to work and I can get impatient behind the wheel, even muttering at errant drivers under my breath. There are moments, even days, when I have to really work to move in the world with a loving heart. But if I don't make the first move, who will? If you don't make the first move, who will? I realize it's a complex world we live in, and we are complex organisms. I won't pretend that all it will take is love to fix the fix we're in. But love can certainly be the salve that makes the pain more tolerable. I challenge us all, in community, to work at moving through our lives with loving hearts. Treat each person who crosses your path with love. Be intentional about it. See how it feels. I know when I'm truly aware of my loving heart, I'm a happier person and so are the people around me. May it be so for you! With love, February RE Calendar
Family PotluckWe hope that a lot of our families plan on coming to the Family Potluck on Friday, February 6. The fun starts at 5:45; please bring a dish to share (see what to bring below). We'll eat first, and then kids will leave to play games (K & up) in the lower level. Preschoolers & younger will play in room 107. Reverend Bonnie Vegiard will lead a discussion in Adams Hall about our current Children's Chapel focus on Bible stories. She'll also have resources to help parents with the sometimes tough questions that can come up about the Bible stories. We expect the evening to end about 8:00 p.m. Here's what to bring if your family name begins with:
Family WorshipOn Sunday, February 8, we will have our third Family Worship of the church year with Reverend Bonnie in Adams Hall. It will run concurrently with the adult service in the sanctuary at both hours. Families are encouraged to attend together, although parents who do not wish to come may drop off their children with designated teachers. Children Prek-1st grade should be dropped off in the Prek room & children 2nd-5th should be dropped off in the 4th grade room. Children left in the care of teachers will return to the classroom after the Family Worship. Parents should pick up their children immediately following the adult service. Of course, we hope most of you will come together as a family. Children in Intermediate and the nursery and youth 6th grade and up will have class as usual. Thank you, Fall TeachersTo all of the wonderful fall teachers and youth helpers, the RE Department extends our deepest gratitude for the gift of your time, effort, enthusiasm, & wisdom while guiding our Eliot children. Hip, hip, hooray!
Parents:The Spring Semester began on January 25. Please make a point of meeting your child's new teachers. Grades 2nd-5th have all begun new areas of study as well. Back by popular demand (and because it was so much fun!), the Eliot Youth Orchestra will begin rehearsals in February for a performance of prelude and interlude at the Mar. 14 service. Please mark your calendars for that date. Rehearsal times and folders will be announced shortly. The Eliot Youth Orchestra is open to all instrumentalists who are seniors in high school and younger. Last year our youngest performer was in fourth grade. We need strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. The music is not difficult, and we need students with all levels of ability. Senior Highers - this is an opportunity for leadership. Your help is greatly appreciated. Stay tuned for more details; if you have any questions, please contact Judy Lindquist at cjjslind@earthlink.netcjjslind@earthlink.net. GATE Dinner PartyGATE partners, be sure to mark your calendars to attend the GATE spaghetti dinner party on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 5:30 p.m. in Adams Hall. We will make dinner together and then attend the Youth Coffeehouse (see the above article). Maybe some of you will sign up to perform with your GATE partner! KIDS - February 1Don't forget to stop by Children's Chapel to make notecards for the Heart and Hand Auction. Stations for making the notecards will be set up after both services (approximately between 10:15 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.). Raising a UU ChildThe next meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Sunday, February 8, at Hilary Babcock's house (call for directions 314-918-0623). The topic will be handling the pressure for our kids to "succeed." How do we define success for our kids - academically and socially - and how do we maintain our expectations in the face of others (family and friends) with different definitions and expectations? Everyone is welcome! Did You Know......that Muslims do not traditionally "celebrate" the beginning of a new year, but do acknowledge the passing of time, and take time to reflect on their own mortality. Muslims measure the passage of time using the Islamic (Hijrah) calendar. This calendar has twelve lunar months, the beginnings and endings of which are determined by the sighting of the crescent moon. This year the Islamic new year begins on February 22. We will explore Islam more fully during Summer Camp (grades K-5th) from August 2 - 6. Look for registration in the spring! For More News...To find out which kids had near perfect attendance during the Fall Semester, or which of our kids celebrate birthdays in February, or to find out about our new families, be sure to pick up a copy of REjuvenation! when you next visit Eliot.
