REjuvenation!Religious Education News - May 2006REjuvenation! ArchivesA Note from Reverend BonnieGeneral AssemblyWe have quite an opportunity this year, as the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregation's General Assembly will be held right here in St. Louis. There will be around 3,000 UU's registered for the event. While there will be business of the Association going on - hearing reports and acting on resolutions - there will also be a lot of other things going on too. There will be workshops on every aspect of church life, lectures, the exhibit hall, and worship services. Here are a few highlights:
I know that a full registration, Wed-Sun, is pricey at $280. You might think about a one-day registration of $95. Saturday would be a great day for that, as you could attend many great workshops and stay on for the Ware Lecture. Sunday morning is open to everyone. We hope many folks at Eliot are able to take advantage of this opportunity in some way. The GA website has lots of information. Let us know if you have any questions. Faithfully,
May RE Calendar
There's No Place Like RESomewhere, over in RE It's that time of year when we need our families and friends who support free religion to come forward and help out our Religious Education program by signing up to teach. We still need a lot of teachers at both hours. Please take a moment to sign up in Adams Hall now through May 14 for one of the following classes in the fall (and if fall won't work, we've got tons of spring slots too!):
Summer Camp 2006: Stories Buddha ToldDon't forget to pick up your registration form for summer camp. We'll be telling stories that Buddha told August 7 - 11 from 9:00 am to noon. Summer camp is for children entering Kindergarten through 5th grade. We are looking forward to learning a lot and having loads of fun. Registration is due by June 25. See you there! Special SundayThere will only be one service on Sunday, May 21 at 10:00 am, followed by the annual meeting. We hope that most members will be able to attend. Classes will operate as usual - younger children (nursery, Intermediate and Pre-Kindergarten) will meet as usual, as will 6th grade and up. Kindergarten through 5th grade will meet in Children's Chapel and be picked up in class afterwards. Summer RE ClassesOnce again, there will be three RE classrooms open this summer. The nursery will be open for children 0 to 3 years of age (or older if not potty trained). We will have a preschool aged class for children 3 years of age through entering kindergarten in the fall. And finally, there will be an older class for children entering 1st grade and up. Parents will need to help staff the rooms. We will have a regular lead classroom teacher in both the preschool and the older classrooms, but parents will need to help assist each week. Members of the Curriculum Committee will lead the curriculum called Heroes for the older RE class. The younger class will be using the curriculum Story Time, a literature based program. Registration for the summer will begin on April 30th. If you plan on attending summer services, please fill out and return the form as quickly as possible so that we may get the classrooms staffed. Most likely parents will only need to help out once or twice, depending on enrollment. Thanks!
Who Learned to Read This Year?We will be celebrating important milestones in our lives at the June 11 service. One such milestone we'd like to recognize is learning to read. Please contact right away if you've got a child who became a reader for the first time this year. Thank you! Mother's Day Child DedicationsEliot traditionally holds child dedication ceremonies during the Mother's Day Flower Communion service on May 14. Any aged child may participate. Please contact Rev. Bonnie Vegiard if you would like to have your child(ren) participate in the child dedication ceremony.
Summer InvitationParents and children are invited to swim on Wednesdays from 1:00 to 5:00 pm at the pool of Pat Lee. The first swim will be on June 7. Pat has been opening her pool for Eliot Chapel friends and members for twenty years now. Bring a snack or drink to share and RSVP at 314-432-5379. There is plenty of shade, a slide and diving board for the adventuresome, and plenty of helping hands and eyes if you have more than one non-swimmer. Babies are welcome. It is a great time to get to know and bond with other adults and kids at Eliot. We have fun! Hope to see you! Calling All Incoming Junior YouthIf you'll be in Junior High next year (this year's GATE kids and 7th graders), you're invited to a fun evening at City Museum on Friday, May 19 from 6:00 to 9:00pm. We'll meet at the museum and have pizza and other refreshments and then explore the place. You should have received a registration form in the mail, but if you haven't or have lost yours, be sure to see Susan Maginn. Forms are due in by May 1. See you there! Cool NewsBecause of brisk donut sales during the first semester, the GATE partners were able to donate $750 to the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation and $232.26 to the Animal Protective Association. Possible Time Change Next FallEliot Chapel is looking at a possible time change that will take effect next fall. Service times will likely be at 9:30 and 11:00 am. At this point, Religious Education classes will remain the same - Nursery - 5th grade at the earlier service and Nursery - Senior High at the later service. ![]() Playgroup FunIf you've got a little one, we would love for you to join us in the nursery at 9:30 am on Friday, May 12 for play (the kids) and conversation (the adults). We meet the second Friday of each month. We love to have new babies visit us too! We look forward to meeting some new families.
