REjuvenation!Religious Education News - October 2006REjuvenation! ArchivesA Note from Reverend BonnieThe Seven PrinciplesFor the first two months of our church year, we focus our Religious Education classes (K-5) around our Unitarian Universalist identity. As UUs, we don't have a list of "right beliefs" to hand down to our children. We want them, and ourselves, to develop our own beliefs in a context of religious community. So, in teaching children about our UU identity, we use the seven principles of the Unitarian Universalist Association. These principles were developed to give all UUs, but especially children, some "hooks" to hang our religious identity upon. We want children to know and respect other religious perspectives (later in the year we'll look at our Jewish heritage and at other world religions) but we also want them to understand that there is something special about being Unitarian Universalists. Our Principles promote the way we should act in the world to make it a better place for all of creation. So here's a handy little song we're going to be singing with the children to help them remember the principles. You might want to know it too and find time to hum it around the house. Singing together touches areas of the spirit beyond the rational mind, and helps to form a deep sense of community. So here is the Do-Re-Mi Principles song! (Sing to the tune of Do-Re-Mi) That will bring us back to me and U.U… Happy Fall,
October RE Calendar
Secret PalsSecret Pals - Remember to mark your calendars for Halloween fun on Friday, October 27 from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. We want to remind everyone to be on time because pals enjoy all the fun activities together - and if you're late, your pal could be disappointed! A few other reminders:
Teacher Planning CoffeesFall teachers - please remember that teacher planning coffees are on Sunday, October 15, in room 001 at 8:45 am and at 10:15 am. This is a great opportunity to meet with your team for planning, to get support if you're having a problem with your class, or to just have some coffee and a bite to eat. Childcare will be available in room 006, so please mark it on your calendar. Sukkot CelebrationThe Curriculum Committee has a fun morning planned for children Kindergarten - 5th grade during class on October 8. At both services, all of the kids, even 4th and 5th graders, will meet in Children's Chapel. They will learn about Sukkot, the Jewish harvest holiday, and then celebrate the season down in rooms 001 - 003. Parents will pick up their children in the lower level that morning. Family WorshipOur first Family Worship of the year is October 29 in Adams Hall, running concurrently with the adult services. Families with children Pre-K through 5th grade should attend together. If that is not possible, teachers are available in room 108 on the upper level (for kids Pre-K - 1st grade) and in room 003 on the lower level (for kids 2nd - 5th grade). Children who are dropped off will attend Family Worship with these teachers and can be picked up back in the classrooms after the service.
Hayride & BonfireWhat better way to spend a cool October evening with friends and family than on a hayride? The Special Events Committee of the RE Council invites you to attend a hayride in Forest Park on Friday, Oct. 6th. Arrive at 6:30 p.m. Our two wagons will depart promptly at 7:05. Afterwards, we get to have a Bonfire! Bring marshmallows to roast and cider to drink. If you have a guitar, bring it along for a sing-along. Cost is $5.00 per person. Youth NewsThe 2006-2007 church year should be a growing as well as fun-filled opportunity for our Junior and Senior Youth. Our youth advisors have scheduled many activities for our youth as a way of increasing their opportunities to grow in their faith as well as in their friendships. In conjunction with their discoveries utilizing the "Compass Points" curriculum, our Junior Youth (grades 7 and 8) will also be participating in such events as a bonfire with Senior Youth on November 4. Our Senior Youth (grades 9-12) are also working on creating their adult selves. They will participate in such activities as a "Poverty Simulation" at First Church sponsored by Faith Beyond Walls in September, participating in the Fall Youth Con at Abraham Lincoln UU in Springfield, Illinois on the weekend of October 6-8, and hosting the Spring Con here at Eliot Chapel over the March 2-4 weekend.
