Partner Church Scholarship Program For The Students of Nyaradszentmarton

St. Martin's in Transylvania, our Partner Church
The Partner Church Committee invites the members and friends of Eliot Chapel to participate in a scholarship program for the students of Saint Martin's Church in the village of Nyaradszentmarton, Romania.
BACKGROUND
Since 1990, Eliot Chapel has partnered with St. Martin's Unitarian Church in Nyaradszentmarton, a rural village in the Transylvanian region of western Romania. We have sought to help them materially as they shift away from the previous communist form of government, and they have benefited us through fellowship and cultural exchange that has occurred. They have extended generous, warm hospitality to our members and ministers who have visited there. They have shared with us the artistry they have kept from their Hungarian culture of the past in needlework, woodcarving and other art forms.
From 2000 to 2002 we began to send a limited amount of scholarship aid for village students. We perceive the result as clearly beneficial, for without our help the students would have had to cut back on their education plans - or give them up entirely. Funds for this came to the Partner Church Committee through its fundraising events.
THE CAMPAIGN
In 2003 we launched a campaign to expand the scholarship program by recruiting Eliot sponsors that share our belief in the power of education.
Now we again request that you consider contributing directly to the scholarship fund in order to help meet the needs of additional students who can benefit from this aid.
Because there is no secondary school in the village, students must travel to larger towns to continue their education. By American standards, the $25 to $35 per month needed to attend school in another town or city in Romania seems relatively inexpensive. The average income, however, is a mere $50 to $110 per month, so keeping students in school is a major financial challenge for Transylvanian families.
In May of 2006, Eliot members donated $1,924. We even had a second grader who contributed her year's allowance of $51.23 and now has a fourth grade girl from the village with whom she corresponds. The funds were distributed among 16 high school and 8 university students. Your donations also provided school supplies at Christmas for 124 elementary students who refer to us as, "The angels of Eliot Chapel."
PARTICIPATION DETAILS
Contributions will be solicited from the Eliot congregation during May, 2007. All contributions will be pooled and sent to the partner church for distribution according to guidelines determined by the St. Martin's Church Board. After Sunday services on May 6 and May 13, the Partner Church Committee will have a table in Adams Hall with pictures and additional information.
If you wish, you may take action now by selecting (high-lighting) the coupon below and printing it out on your computer printer. Then fill in the blanks, enclose it with your check. Thank you for your participation.
