September 2024 Board Bits

  • The Board is reviewing its expectations for the process/transparency observer, the Board member (designated on a rotating basis) who observes and evaluates the events of each Board meeting. David T. Cox is spearheading this review.
  • The Board has written a covenant to guide the interactions of its members. Rebecca Taylor suggested that the members bring forward one particular element of the Congregational Covenant: “We will be kinder to each other than we have to be.” The Board will discuss that suggestion at the October 15 meeting.
  • The Finance Committee of the Board will meet about every two months.
  • Good news! Eliot surpassed its pledge commitments for 23-24 by $11, 000.
  • The Board hopes to hold its first linkage event in November.

Linkage events exist to make sure that the Board has the opportunity to listen to congregants’ viewpoints. Linkage events also promote the joyous intermingling of various age groups. Bob Becker, Sue Bell, and Rebecca Taylor are the committee for the upcoming event.

  • Work on developing the minister evaluation process is going forward. Kathy Brunts and Bob Becker are the Board sub-committee for this work.
  • The Board will continue with restructuring its policy monitoring work.
  • The Board discussed the preliminary article in a sequence of New York Times pieces on the broad theme of the religious shift in America. The next article up for discussion will be “Christianity’s Got a Branding Problem.”
